Now Boarding, Los Angeles, USA
Obtaining that uplifting travel fix has become somewhat more local, thanks to a new stylised dive bar in West Hollywood. Dressed by Sayre Ziskin – the local designer behind popular San Francisco-based haunts such as Brass Tack and Holy Water – the 1960s vintage aesthetic is influenced by aviation and harks back to the golden age of travel; plush walnut wood panels and brass detailing pave the way for a space filled with quirky details, including a conversation-starting flight map by artist Paul Rice, geometric wallpaper, cosy dark leather banquets accessorised with airplane seat head protectors and a Le Corbusier-style sculpture which runs the length of one wall. The bar top evokes an airplane wing shape, where cocktails such as the ‘Wheels Up’ – with Birddog peach whisky, Aperol and tangerine – are concocted by mixologist and co-owner, Wil Figueroa. In-flight entertainment includes live music or DJs spinning Motown, old school hip-hop and funk.
